Microsoft Surface Book 2 overview
Experience 2 times more power than before with the Microsoft Surface Book 2, featuring an 8th generation Intel Quad Core i7 Processor, 512 GB of storage, 16 GB RAM and up to 17 hours of battery life.
The new Microsoft Surface Book 2 delivers blazing graphics in a vibrant PixelSense™ Display & let you experience faster, easier, more natural navigation with touchscreen.
Enjoy more space for your ideas with an edge-to-edge display and ultra-thin bezel.
And this all packs in a whopping retail price of 3000$ or 2,44,500 INR.
That’s pretty expensive for what you are getting. Well, just not jump on the conclusion now. And see everything about the surface book 2.
You might not notice by looking at it, but yes, this is a brand-new laptop.
From the outside, the Surface Book 2 hasn’t changed much from its prior iteration.
It maintains its greatest trick that is detaching from the keyboard to turn into a tablet.
It’s still gray magnesium with a reflective Windows logo stamped on the lid.
And, in Surface Book tradition, it doesn’t close, prevented from doing so by its fulcrum hinge.
Lifting the lid reveals the 3:2, 13.5-inch, 3000 x 2000 PixelSense display.
While Microsoft told us the hinge is stronger than the one on the first-gen Surface Book, the part still would flop a bit while on my lap.
The deck and keyboard are made of the same, clean, gray plastic that, while attractive, draws your attention toward the screen more than anything else.
At 3.6 pounds and 12.3 x 9.1 x 0.9 inches, the Surface Book 2 is significantly larger than other 13-inch laptops.
The Lenovo Miix 720 is easily the lightest, at 2.6 pounds with the keyboard, and is 11.5 x 8.5 x 0.6 inches. However, none of these competitors features a detachable screen.
The keys feel great, with an appropriate clickiness that makes them satisfying to type on.
The Surface Book 2 is a bit slight on ports compared to its competitors. On its left side are a pair of USB 3.1 ports and an SD card reader, and the right side boasts a USB Type-Cport and a proprietary Surface Connect port.
There’s another Surface Connect port on the bottom of the tablet, so you can charge that independently.
The headphone jack is on the right side of the tablet, which is awkward because you’ll have some cable slack.
But it’s a necessary evil if you want to be able to use headphones when you remove the tablet from the base.
USB Type-C is a big addition, as Microsoft has been steadfast that this port wasn’t ready for prime time.
famously skipping it over and over again on the Surface Pro and earlier this year on the Surface Laptop.
At this price, though, Microsoft really ought to take it one step further and include Thunderbolt 3, for faster data-transfer speeds.
Microsoft Surface Book 2 display
The 13.5 inch pixel sense display on this surface book is stunning to look at. It has 3000 × 2000 resolution which results in a taller display and is perfect for browsing web or creating documents.
Well the display looks amazing, good and bright but it is not as good as compared to the macbook pro display.
Due to the fact that it doesn’t have a white color gamut as the macbook pro does.
Which effects in making the screen not as vibrant as the apple’s macbook pro. But as i will say it is a good display. And one of the best displays on a windows laptop.
The Microsoft Surface Book 2 display is also compatible for 10 point touch, a surface pen and a surface dial.
Which apple doesn’t provide with any of its laptops or macbooks.
But now as we dont have the surface pen or surface dial to review alongside it is always good to have additional features and get more out of your laptop.
The trackpad in this surface book 2 is one of the best trackpads in use in a windows laptop.
And if you are a daily macbook pro user you will appreciate the multiple gesture control on this trackpad.
The buttons placed in this laptop is well and good feels good when clicked. Overall a good trackpad in a surface book.
Performance of Microsoft Surface Book 2
Now as we come to the performance of Microsoft Surface Book 2. The quad core intel 8th gen i7 top of the line processor works amazing in everyday work and a casual gaming session.
The Surface book 2 scored a geek benchmark of about 5081 on a single core and 15595 on multi core.
When you come for its SSD it comes at the average 2500mb /sec as its read speed and a 1200mb/sec as its write speed.
Which is really fast for everyday operations and gaming.
When it comes to gaming we installed some of the games we play on the pc like overwatch, apex legends and black ops.
We were very optimistic on the gaming of the GTX 1050 GPU.
On playing overwatched we were able to play the game on 60 FPS 1080p at medium settings.
Were the games like apex legends and black ops was able to play on 1080p lowest settings and the FPS kept fluctuating between 50-60 FPS.
Which isn’t terrible but isn’t that good as compared to a gaming laptop with a higher end graphics card.
Again gaming is not the Microsoft surface book 2 dominates in It plays games in low to medium settings in 1080p pretty well.
Speakers in the Microsoft surface book 2. Well i am not a big fan of speakers in this Microsoft surface book 2.
It is midi occur best it distorts at high volume.
The speakers in surface book 2 lacks space and doesn’t get loud.
Where it competitor the macbook pro produces a loud sound, good bass and a clearer sound too then the surface book 2.
Which is much of a disappointment with such a gen packed laptop.
Ports in Microsoft Surface Book 2
This surface book 2 by Microsoft has a lot of ports when it comes to connectivity.
It includes two USB-A ports, a full size sc/sd card reader, a USB-C and a surface book 2 charging port.
The charging port in surface book 2 is a magnetic port which is same the apple’s previous year mag safe technology, Which personally I really liked.
But we will be very much happier if we have seen one more USB-C port or even better if a Thunderbolt 3 port.
The two cameras on the Surface Book 2 are both excellent. When I took a selfie with the front-facing, 2560 x 1440 camera, my face was clear as day,
I could make out individual hairs on my head and in my beard, and my blue eyes popped against my light skin.Surface Book 2 Webcam image.
The rear, 3254 x 1836 camera took an admirable photo of some plants in our office, accurately depicting every shade of green in the leaves (and some unfortunate brown spots).
The battery in Microsoft surface book 2 is claimed by Microsoft as of 17 hours.
But during 2-3 weeks of our testing the laptop it exceeded our expectations. From web browsing to 35-40 minutes of gaming session and watching videos and movies.
We never felt to go to the wall electric outlet and put this laptop on charging.
Don’t worry about the Surface Book 2 getting too hot to handle. After 15 minutes of streaming HD video from YouTube.
The machine measured 84 degrees on the back of the tablet, which is below our 95-degree comfort threshold.
So overall the Microsoft surface book 2 is a solid device for everyday use.
But the heavy price tag is big concern even though the performance is as similar to the base model macbook pro.
Even though its beautiful design a great display and a 2 in 1 compatibility is a great refreshment in 2019. It is difficult to recommend the surface book 2 in 2019.
