Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021

Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021 – The Perfect 2 IN 1 convertible?

So, we are back with another laptop review, as this time lenovo is back again in the market with a new convertible laptop. The Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 & 15 inch laptops. Which basically replaces the lenovo Yoga c940 laptop.

This Lenovo Yoga 9i 15 is the 15.6 inch laptop which is kind of an unusual breed of laptop, as it’s a 15.6 inch convertible and not just that but has intel H series 45 watt powerful CPUs.

These are the CPUs you will mostly find in gaming laptops and mobile workstations. Not only CPUs this also have Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti MaxQ graphics as well as it supports a pen and the pen lives in the silo so that you won’t lose it ;).

The laptop is made up of an aluminum casing that’s fairly rigid. The keyboard has a white backlit with a number pad on board.

A Wifi 6 intel flavor AX201 with bluetooth 5.0 which seems a pretty good package overall. And so let us start this in depth Lenovo Yoga 9i review without any further ado.

But, first let us have a look at the specifications this Lenovo Yoga 9i has to offer.

Audio & the Rotating Soundbar

Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021
Rotating Soundbar

There is a rotating soundbar on this laptop and as far as Audio of windows laptops are concerned this is one of the better sounding laptops you will get at this price.

Of Course, the macbook pro 16 in my opinion is superior and the best out there as it sounds phenomenal. But, this is up there on the windows side.

So, if you are looking for a laptop with a great sound. This Lenovo Yoga 9i should definitely be in your list.

CPU, GPU and Benchmarks

One of the things that are new this year is the move to 10th generation processors as they are the 45 watt 8 series processors from intel.

This Core i7 10750HU on our laptop is also paired with a new GPU and this one now has the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 TI with max Q design.

We have also seen this combination between CPU and GPU before and it actually worked out pretty well. Things like video editing, gaming and all are possible on this laptop and runs Smoothly.

Performance

Gaming on Yoga 9i

Gaming is the another area of this laptop where you will see a marked improvement as we also saw a greater number improvement over last year’s model.

because this is running the better GPU and what that tells us is heavy games like GTA 5 when put on high settings like 1080p you get 89 FPS and that’s actually very respectable as other games i ran on this laptop were also somewhere close to this.

So, for gaming this very capable machine and you can run any game on it easily.

Internals & User Upgradeability

When it comes to the user upgradeability it’s a mixed reaction now.

Once you are inside this laptop the SSD is user upgradeable although the one they include with this laptop has some pretty nice reads and write speed when checked from the crystal disk mark results.

Internals & Upgradeability

Unfortunately, the ram is soldered into the motherboard and so you won’t be able to upgrade that which of course is a negative thing.

But, that’s the trend we have been seeing as of late in 2020. A move towards non – upgradeability for the user’s end and i personally don’t like this trend.

The Wi-Fi card on this laptop is also soldered and so you will not be able to upgrade that yourself. But, the good news here it’s Wi-Fi 6 pre installed making it pretty much future proof for the foreseeable future.

Display on this Lenovo Yoga 9I 15

This is one thing I really love about this laptop. The display on this laptop is a 15.6 inch Full HD display and it’s a HDR 400 nits dolby vision display.

What does this mean is that you are going to get some really rich and deep blacks and vibrant colors while watching netflix, youtube and amazon prime video.

Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021
Display

This display enhances the viewing experience and it works really well in my testing so far.

This display on this laptop also covers the color gamut really well. Which is really important for things like color grading, video editing, photoshop lightroom as for this work you want to have something that really covers the color gamut really nice.

This also has good color accuracy. So, overall a really nice display that gets very bright as I measured over 400 nits.

Okay, so like every other thing this display is also not PERFECT as this is a pretty glossy display and so you will see a lot of glare and reflections.

Especially in direct sunlight. This is something to keep in mind but, that is something to keep in mind by its high 400 nits brightness which certainly helps out in that department.

But, it is a glossy display and I personally prefer matter displays. But, that’s for another day and what we get here is a GLOSSY DISPLAY.

Now, one of the other things you will notice on this display is it’s thin bezels all around and a reverse notch here.

There’s dual functionality with that it acts as a latch so you can open this lid up with one finger and at the same time it also houses the hardware for the webcam.

Webcam & Fingerprint Scanner

Speaking of the webcam on this Lenovo Yoga 9i 15 – inch convertible this is replacing the C940 from last year as it’s a 720p 30 FPS webcam.

It also has a Shutter switch so if you need more privacy and security it has that and because of which it is not a windows hello camera that means you cannot log in with face recognition.

But, it does have a fingerprint scanner that allows you to log in with windows hello which is also accurate and fast and does it job nicely, no complaints in that.

Ports & Connectivity

When it comes to the ports, it’s a little bit of mixed reaction again. So, on the left side of the laptop you get a power port which looks like a USB-A port and it’s not.

It’s a power port proprietary port from lenovo. Lenovo does ship this with a 135 watt adapter to power this laptop and we will be talking about the battery life in just a moment.

Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021
Ports

There are two thunderbolt three ports on this that means it’s data charge displays 4K 60 FPS.

You also get the 3.5mm audio jack and that rounds out the left side of the Lenovo Yoga 9i 15.

So, for the right side you get your silo which houses the pen, we will be talking about the pen in a moment.

You also get a USB-A port and finally your power port. There is no card reader on this, no micro sd card slot, no full size sd card slot like other laptops out there.

Which of course feels a negative thing especially if you are creative and you do things like photoshop and video editing you want to have that card reader for that extra convenience.

But, you don’t get that on this laptop. The other part that’s missing is there’s no HDMI out on this laptop. Of course those thunderbolt 3 ports are full service ports.

The other negative of ports on this laptop is the fact that those two thunderbolt 3 ports are located together not on separate sides of each other like you get with the dell xps 13.

I actually prefer that but not a big deal and probably not a deal breaker for most people.

Battery Life

When it comes to battery life of the Lenovo Yoga 9i 15 i have a mixed reaction on it, As when i say this has a 69 watt hour battery not the biggest for a 15 inch that we have seen so far.

But, certainly not the smallest i have ever seen.

This laptop gives you anywhere from five to six hours of battery life in moderate use that is watching netflix, youtube, amazon and everyday tasks like microsoft office and web browsing.

Basically, the battery life on this laptop will directly depend on the work you do with this laptop so your mileage may vary. But, you will not get more than a maximum of six hours of battery life from this laptop.

Which is not the best when it comes to all day battery life which is something we all want but, sadly we don’t get that on this laptop.

Also, this 15 inch laptop is a little bit more stationary especially for those doing creative work. You are probably going to use this at a desk most of the time plugged in.

But, when you are travelling you will surely need to carry that 135 watt power adapter with you in your bag.

Build, Construction and Size of this Yoga 9i

When it comes to the build quality of this laptop, the all metal design is very premium and has no flex and feels rock solid as far as the build is concerned i am absolutely loving it.

Built & Design

I personally like the minimal design and branding as we have the YOGA branding on the lid of the laptop.

As far as flex is concerned you get a very little flex for a 2 in 1 convertible. We normally see a lot more flex than what we are getting with this lenovo yoga 9i and that’s really good and I am really happy with that.

Keyboard & Touchpad

As for the keyboard you get a nice key travel and multi stage backlight. Now, it does have a numeric keypad on the keyboard and some people may not like that.

Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021 Keyboard & Touchpad
Keyboard & Touchpad

Because this moves the touchpad and the keyboard off to the centre towards the left of the laptop and some people may not like that including me 🙁

Though, the number crunchers like accountants will definitely appreciate the inclusion of the numpad.

The precision touchpad on this laptop is very responsive, scrolling feels smooth and the gesture worked as advertised.

The keyboard & touchpad on this laptop provides everything you’d want. The laptop also gives you the ability to take notes with the pen.

The Pen

The pen is stored in the device itself and it also charges in the device and it takes only a few seconds to give you a pretty nice charge and it works well.

Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021 Pen
Pen

The pen is great for taking notes, great for sketching out artwork. The one thing i like about the pen is it is stored in the device and also charges inside which is a convenience factor for me.

I also wish that other laptops too have this feature.

Conclusion

Wrapping up it all. What do i think of this lenovo yoga 9i 15 after the full Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021.

I got to say that i really like the performance out of the that core i7 107.50H 10th generation 45 Watt CPU 6 core processors from intel paired with that nvidia geforce GTX 1650 TI max q on this laptop.

You can do gaming on this, you could do editing in terms of video, photoshop, lightroom. It can handle everything very well.

Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021
Lenovo Yoga 9i Review 2021

Now, the fact that it has a really nice display that is 15.6 inch IPS display which is very good and they do offer a 4k display that i don’t think you necessarily need.

Especially, if you want to get a little big battery life and speaking of the battery life, it’s not the best out of that 69 watt hour battery five to six hours at best.

The inclusion of the pen and the display which gets very bright as it’s an HDR 400 dolby vision display which is gorgeous.

Some of the negatives in this lenovo yoga 9i are there is no SD card reader, no HDMI port on this which is again on a 15 inch laptop.

You get the two thunderbolt 3 ports. Which are two full service thunderbolt 3 ports. I would have liked to have seen them on the opposite side of the laptop.

They are located bunched up together on that left side. The webcam is nothing special to write about but, overall i think lenovo did a really good job with this laptop.

The performance on this laptop is also pretty good and you will also notice the fans will kick in under heavy load. Nut, nothing too obnoxious, nothing too terrible.

The laptop does start to get a bit warm under heavy load. Especially, when you are doing gaming.

Still I didn’t notice too much thermal throttling. But my overall feeling is this Lenovo Yoga 9i 15 inch is definitely a buy if you are in the market for a 2 in 1 convertible laptop.

Especially, with that rotating soundbar if you really want that edge in sound. This is definitely a recommendation by Bestinlaptops.
