Best laptops for students

Huawei Matebook X Pro review

This the Huawei MateBook X Pro and is Huawei’s best laptop and we have to say that it’s a really good laptop.

But, i am not sure what they have done with this laptop. So the laptop can be ridiculously different.

The new processors out there the gpu well Huawei did improve in that so let’s get to hardware of this new laptop the Huawei MateBook X Pro.

Huawei Matebook X Pro

So looking at the laptops exterior you can say that there has been no certain change in the design.

Except, the logo has been changed to a simple text based Huawei written on the lid.

Then the weird sunflower 🌻 type of logo. The left hand side of the Huawei MateBook X Pro you can see ports like type c and this laptop has got two of them.

One of them is for charging the laptop and other one is for the thunderbolt port.

There’s also a charging led out there and a headphone jack.

Now when you hit to the left hand side you get not much going on but a Type-A legacy port out there.

Everyone wants to have in his laptop and is always good to have it.

  • Clever webcam still flawed

Huawei Matebook X Pro Display

Opening up the Huawei MateBook X Pro here we can see all the magic begin that is “The display”.

The one of the best displays available on a windows laptop. It has a resolution of about 3000 × 2000 aspect ratio.

which is the same as the Microsoft surface book 2 uses and also in surface laptops.

It looks very awesome and gives you that edge to edge display.

Huawei Matebook X Pro

Well there is a chin below the display but you will not be considering it in the display when using.

Here in this Huawei Matebook X Pro you get a 100% SRGB and a 75% adobe RGB so the colors accuracy is pretty good.

It is a touch screen but does not support a pen. But it’s okay! As you still get the touch screen.

The brightness on this display of Huawei Matebook X Pro is really good. Huawei says it to be of 450nits but when we measured it was 420 nits and that is really bright.

Most laptops are around 300 to 320 nits. So, going above 400 nits is very nice.

This Huawei laptop also has auto brightness 🔆 option which not all laptops have.

You have consider that the auto brightness is super aggressive and if you leave it on it can impact battery life.

And you will be comfortable to change the brightness manually by keys rather than using the auto brightness.

Huawei Matebook X Pro keyboard

Now, let us look at the keyboard deck of the huawei matebook x pro. The keyboard has not been majorly changed in this laptop.

The keyboard is very good and gives about 1.2 mm of key travel and pretty shallow, feels clicky.

You do get backlit keys which do look very nice and good in the dark.

The MateBook X Pro’s connectivity is surprisingly good. On its left side sits a pair of USB-C ports, one with the high-speed Thunderbolt interface (USB 3.1 Gen 2), the other with just a conventional USB 3.1 Gen 1.

Huawei Matebook X Pro ports

On the right side, the Matebook X Pro squeezes in a single USB-A port, neatly compromising between old and new peripherals and it gets better.

As Huawei has done with some of its other products notably the 2016 Matebook tablet.

It’s also included a dedicated USB hub, the MateDock 2, to accomodate legacy hardware.

The hub includes a USB-A port, an HDMI interface, and even VGA along with a USB-C pass-through that allows you to charge the notebook or connect to a display.

Though the Huawei Matebook X Pro isn’t cheap, the addition of a hub is a thoughtful gesture that newcomers to USB-C will appreciate.

Where there is no room for the webcam in the display of Huawei Matebook X Pro.

Huawei Matebook X Pro review

Huawei put it in the keyboard with a key specially made for webcam. As you press the key web cam pops out.

Now depending on how you use the webcam it may bother you.

But in our case we just don’t use the webcam we rarely use this web cam and as the Huawei thinks someone barely uses the webcam.

So, they placed it in the keyboard which focus on nose. Well it can be ignored by not using it much ;).

Power button / fingerprint scanner

Huawei Matebook X Pro fingerprint

Now at the left top corner of the Huawei Matebook X Pro you get a power button. Well it is not a traditional power button but rather a touch sensitive one.

You also get a fingerprint reader built in it so you get the windows hello login.

When you keep the power button held for a second it will come from a deep hibernation.

Show you the Huawei logo and redirect you to the windows hello login.

When you look at the trackpad in the Huawei Matebook X Pro It has biggest trackpad available in the market on windows laptop besides the macbook pro.

Huawei Matebook X Pro trackpad

Thus trackpad has a really nice smooth, precise drivers. Which just glides you all through the task you are performing.

But this trackpad has a lot of movement which I really don’t care for.

Thus problem is same as last year’s matebook. I hope they fix this problem too. It is a really good trackpad though.

I have no issues while using it. That’s all that really matters.

The other thing that Huawei has done right with this Huawei Matebook X Pro laptop is the audio.

It has four speakers at the top deck below the keyboard with dolby atmos technology.

It literally produces some good audio and if you are looking for a media device you should surely be going with this laptop.

The speakers are amazing. So, till now every thing was same in this laptop except that Thunderbolt 3 port.

So, let us now see what is upgraded in this Huawei Matebook X Pro laptop.

The Intel Core i7-8550U CPU and 16GB of RAM in the Huawei MateBook X Pro provides tons of speed for nimble, seamless multitasking.

After splitting my screen between a 1080p YouTube videos and 12 Chrome tabs (including Giphy, the Google Doc for this review and Slack).

I saw not a stutterer or pause when scrolling through pages or opening new tabs.

The huawei MateBook X Pro earned a solid 12,913 on the Geekbench 4 general performance test, crushing the 9,930 premium notebook average.

That’s close to the 13,090 from the Spectre 13 (1.8GHz Intel Core i7-8550U with 8GB of RAM), higher than the 9,213 from the 13-inch.

MacBook Pro (Intel Core i5-7267U with 8GB of RAM), and lower than the 14,180 from the XPS 13 (Core i7-8550U with 8GB of RAM).

The 512 NVMe PCIe SSD in the MateBook X Pro copied 4.97GB of multimedia files in 18 seconds, for a rate of 282.7 MBps.

That’s faster than the 279.3 MBps category average but, slower than the 508 MBps SSD in the XPS 13.

The 727 MBps NVMe SSD in the MacBook Pro 13-inch and the 339.3 MBps M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in the Spectre 13.

The MateBook X Pro finished our Excel VLOOKUP test (matching 65,000 names to their corresponding addresses) in 1 minute and 49 seconds.

That’s longer than the 1:41 category average and the 1:08 time from the DELL XPS 13.

The MateBook X Pro needed 27 minutes and 18 seconds to finish our video transcoding test in Handbrake, which downscales a 4K video to 1080p. The DELL XPS 13 finished it in 16:00.

The Nvidia MX150 graphics card (with 2GB of memory) earned a 116,359 on the Ice Storm Unlimited graphics test.

That score not only wallops the 82,931 category average, but beats the 85,616 from the DELL XPS 13 (integrated Intel HD Graphics 620) and the 75,114 from the hp Spectre 13 (integrated Intel HD Graphics 620).

The MateBook X Pro also ran the Dirt 3 racing game (set to medium graphics at 1080p) at a super-smooth 117 frames per second (fps).

That’s faster than the 65 fps category average, the 41 fps rate from the MacBook Pro (Intel Iris Plus 650) and the 57 fps rate from the Spectre 13.

Battery life

The Huawei MateBook X Pro provides close to all-day battery power. The system lasted an impressive 9 hours and 55 minutes on the Battery Test (web surfing at 150 nits).

This runtime is over an hour longer than the 8:53 category average and obliterates the Spectre 13 (5:16), and it’s in between the times from the 1080p XPS 13 (11:59) and the 4K XPS 13 (8:23).

If you use your laptop in your lap, we hope you like a little warmth.

After we streamed 15 minutes of HD video on the Huawei MateBook X Pro.

Its underside measured 103 degrees Fahrenheit and its keyboard measured 101 degrees.

Temperatures that broke our 95-degree comfort threshold, though its touchpad stayed a cool 88 degrees.

Huawei’s Matebook X Pro offers competent performance just under $1,500.

Huawei offers a laptop with a 3K display pairing it with a decent discrete graphics processor for a bit more.

Huawei Matebook X Pro review

Dell’s XPS series remains on top. however, at least from a general performance standpoint.

The new Dell XPS 13 (9370) remains our Editors’ Choice within the category.

While it’s time for Huawei to abandon its experiment with keyboard-mounted webcams. There’s really nothing else to highlight as wrong with the huawei Matebook X Pro.

In fact, if you’re looking for a bargain gaming ultrabook, the Huawei Matebook X Pro fits the bill—though purists might not be happy with a slower external GPU and Thunderbolt port.

In our view, Huawei cut a corner here and there, but focused its efforts on areas where consumers care the most.

  2. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
