Dell Xps 15 Review – Should you even consider in 2020?

Dell xps 15
Dell xps 15

The dell xps series has been an industry favorite for a long time and the Dell xps 13 inch was our personal favorite.

The dells xps 15 is a 15 inch model which has a well rounded sleek design, an impressive display and long lasting battery life.

So here’s our DELL XPS 15 Review .

Dell has really improved in its 2019 15 inch dell xps model as compared to the last years model.

Dell XPS 15 features and specs

  • CPU: 8th-gen Intel Core i7-8750H CPU.
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q.
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4/2,666MHz.
  • Display: 15.6-inch 1920×1080 IPS non-touch screen with anti-reflective coating.
  • Storage: 256GB Toshiba NVMe drive.
  • Battery: 97 Watt-hour.

Dell xps 15 Overview

The dell has addressed our issues with the previous model of dell xps and made some outstanding changes to the dell xps 15 and maybe delivered the best changes dell can make.

One of the silliest was the location of webcam😔.

The dell claims the Dell xps 15 is one of the slimmest and lightest laptops available in the market. And it might be true.

When compared to laptops like LG grand 15 the Asus zenbook pro 15 and the acer concept D5 as this are the upcoming gaming notebooks the dell xps 15 feels clunky.

Dell Xps 15 Review - Should you even consider in 2020?

The 4.4 pound Dell xps 15 feels much heavier than the LG grand 15 and the acer’s concept D5.

Therefore, dell needs to listen to the feedback of the customers to improve.

The best upgrade in this years model is its webcam placement.

This year models webcam sits near the very less bezel on top of the display.

So we don’t have to adjust yourself before video calling. As it was a headache in previous model of dell xps.

I can video call my co-workers without having to show my nostrils or double chin 😛 it was a much needed upgraded.

For this thing to work dell also need to fit the webcam in a tiny bezel above the display and also, sacrifice the windows hello login through face recognition.

This means that if you want to unlock your laptop by just a glance at it? Well, it won’t.

But, you can rather unlock the dell xps 15 by finger print. As the fingerprint scanner is embedded in the power button.

Price and availability

The Dell XPS 15 starts at a decently affordable price of $1,168 for its base configuration, which has a good amount of power.

It comes packing a 9th-generation quad-core Intel Core i5 processor (CPU), 8GB of 2,666MHz memory (RAM) and a 256GB PCIe solid-state drive (SSD) Behind a 15.6-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) display.

This particular configuration is unavailable in the UK and Australia.

The base configuration in the UK boasts a 9th generation i7, but with the same memory, storage and display.

On the other hand, the base configuration in Australia packs the same processor, memory and display, but offers double the storage.

Overview

Of course, the star of this show is the fully kitted out configuration.

A maxed-out Dell XPS 15 2019 rocks an 8-core Intel Core i9 CPU, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics (4GB GDDR5), 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD, all behind an OLED 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) multitouch display.

This packed up configuration will set you back a lofty $3,118 (£2,899, about AU$4,440).

This specific configuration is not available in Australia, where the maxed-out option has the same internal components.

but with the storage limited at 1TB. This will set you back AU$5,199.

You’ll likely to gain access to those enhanced Nvidia graphics somewhere in between the extremes of the available configurations, as has been the case in the past.

We do know that the minimum amount to get that gorgeous OLED display will be $2,018/£1,868/AU$3,499.

Therefore, you’ll probably see an impressive boost in performance out of this year’s Dell XPS 15 for not much more than the current price of the DELL XPS 13.

Design

Dell xps 15 design
Design

Aluminum and carbon fiber – which is a match made in techie heaven.

At least it is when you’re talking about an XPS laptop. On the dell XPS 15, the combination is upscale and modern.

Something you’d be proud to show off in a coffee shop or board room.

The chrome Dell logo gleams in the center of the silver anodized aluminum lid just like the slightly chamfered edges of the system.

Adding rigidity and a stylish flair to the mix is the carbon-fiber keyboard deck.

Which houses the full-size keyboard, a large touchpad and the circular power button playing double duty as a fingerprint reader.

As with all modern XPS notebooks, the latest 15 rocks those barely-there bezels, courtesy of Dell’s InfinityEdge design.

But unlike all but the most recent XPS 13, the webcam on the 15-inch is right where it belongs, in the top bezel.

Keyboard

Dell xps 15 keyboard
Keyboard

The dell xps 15 keyboard has now a significant travel and a software feedback.

But still it is not cushy as the lenovo’s thinkpad and certainly feels more comfortable than macbook pro.

And offers more depth than the surface book 2.

Trackpad

The trackpad on dell xps 15 has not changed much and is same as the last years.

Which is the same in size, looks and same in response. Which is fine!

But if it would have more room for performing gestures and it would be appreciated.

Ports

Ports

Dell has outfitted the Dell XPS 15 with enough ports and slots to make it a formidable workhorse.

It’s one of the few premium systems to offer an SD card reader.

In addition, you’ll find a USB 3.1 Type-A port with a wedge lock slot and a battery indicator button on the right side of the laptops.

Ports

Along the left is another USB 3.1 Type-A port with a Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI 2.0 and jacks for power and a headset.

Display

The dell xps 15 display, well it has a 4k OLED display. which is just gorgeous!

Which makes the laptop look premium and bright colorful colors glancing everywhere.

Dell xps 15 display
Display

We truly support the trend as the hp spectre x350 15 and lenovo’s thinkpad X1 extreme and gaming notebooks from acer and Dell own Alienware also have them.

Not only this beautiful display helps watch movies and photos. But also helps in editing the photos and videos and shows more detail.

The downside with this display is as it is a 4k panel it generally sucks more power.

Audio

The speakers of dell xps 15 are a bonus to a person who is an entertainment freak.

As this laptop has a great pair of speakers. Which make a loud and clear sound.

And truly enjoy the vocals of your favourite singer on this laptop.

Battery life

The dell claims that the battery life of the dell xps 15 to be of about 20 hours.

Which will be impressive if it was true. But in battery life tests we found that it is somewhere near to 13 to 13 and a half hours of battery life.

That’s pretty responsible though and more than enough for a productive day.

It is still longer than asus alienware 15 and asus zenbook pro. Although the asus zenbook pro has that battery draining touchscreen trackpad.

You can also increase the battery life by lowering the display brightness. Or if you have chosen lower battery hungry hardware.

Performance

So our review unit of dell xps 15 packed in a high end variant of hardware.

It had an intel 8th generation 8 core intel core i9 CPU. A NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 16 16 graphics card.

Performance

A 32GB ram and 1TB of SSD and that is what we got a super powerful machine in our hand.

In our testing it blazed through all our tasks.

This was very fast at gaming and video or photo editing. As this is the high end variant it needs a bomb of money.

Heat

The Dell XPS 15 can get a bit hot under the collar, but thanks to venting located in front of the hinge and along the bottom of the laptop, it’s never uncomfortable to use in your lap.

After 15 minutes of playing a YouTube video, the touchpad measured a cool 88 degrees Fahrenheit.

The center of the keyboard reached 96 degrees, which is just above our 95-degree comfort threshold.

The notebook’s undercarriage was a warm 102 degrees

Webcam

It just might have one of the best webcams I’ve used on a premium laptop, and they made it themselves.

After consistent complaints about the “nose cam,” the company went back to the lab and create a shooter measuring only 0.9 inches, making it Dell’s smallest to date.

Dell Xps 15 Review - Should you even consider in 2020?

But it’s not the size that matters, it’s the image quality. I’m happy to report that Dell doesn’t disappoint.

The test shots I took in my living room had accurate color from my chocolate complexion, purple locs and marigold-and-white dress.

There’s definitely some visual noise, but it’s not nearly as bad as what you’ll find on competing systems.

Plus, it was sharp enough that I could make out the heart cutout on my ring when I gave the peace sign.

Pros and cons

Dell xps 15 pros :-

  • Striking 4K OLED display.
  • Great overall and graphics performance.
  • Webcam in the right place.
  • Slim, attractive design

Dell xps 15 cons :-

  • Below-average battery life

Verdict

The Dell XPS 15’s striking OLED screen, Core i9 CPU and Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU make it a beautiful and powerful workhorse.

Conclusion

The dell xps 15 keeps the repetition of its family. And is a great machine in looks, performance and everything.

You should be going with it if you want a powerful machine and good looks.

That was all about the dell xps 15. Tell us what do you liked the most in this laptop in our comments section.
