What’s up guys today we’ll be talking about the Dell g5 gaming laptop.
Just for context this is Dell’s mid tier gaming laptop.
You’ll need to step down to the Dell g3 for that. anyway, the price point of the Dell g5 is 1350$ for the 1660 TI and 1450$ for the RTX 2060.
But, just keep in mind that dell does actually have a separate laptop to hit that thousand dollar price point with the 1660 TI.
There is your overview on the Dell G5 gaming laptop. Let’s jump into the Dell g5 review.

Built and looks
The build quality of Dell g5 is excellent like really good and not just that but, it feels like a high quality laptop as well.
Some of the premium gaming laptops will be super rigid. but, they just feel like they’re made of cheap plastic and it sucks. The dell g5 is built well.
This feels like metal and it looks good too.
The hinge is great for one hand open and there’s a very little screen vobble when using it on your lap which I like.
keyboard deck is solid there’s basically no flex on the chassis and the screen is also quite rigid.
There’s some flex but, I guess because of how thick it is it’s just a little bit stiffer than other plastic screens.
The rubber feet on the bottom are really grippy. so, there’s no sliding around on your desk or anything like that.
Aside from the hideous gloss coating on the upper deck and they nailed the build quality on this dell g5 gaming laptop.
Keyboard and Trackpad
There’s a full-size keyboard with a number-pad on the right.
If that’s your gem these switches are good. A little bit shallow but it’s not too heavy and I like the layer.
I also like the fact that all of your volume, your media and brightness controls are in the function row.
It’s such a minor detail. but, it’s really annoying when companies put the volume controls on like the arrow keys or the number pad.
It also has a three-stage white LED backlighting and yeah it’s a bit shallow but I had no problems gaming or typing the scripts on it.
This keyboard is really easy to get used to.
The trackpad is okay, it has all of your goodies like windows precision drivers accurate tracking and good buttons.
but, the plastic surface gives it a bit more resistance than a glass surface when you press them harder during something like drag-and-drop.
Our review unit of dell g5 is running a 1080p 60 Hertz panel. but, there’s an optional 144 Hertz option.
If that’s your jam this panel in particular is not that impressive, the brightness is decent 275 nits. so, a bit on the dimmer side.
not, the worst but, the color gamut and the color accuracy is quite poor and if you’re a content creator this won’t really cut it.
However, if you’re just looking to game on this thing that shouldn’t really be a concern for you.
It’s an IPS panel so, it’s got good viewing angles, good contrast and the bezels are relatively thin for a laptop at this price range.
It’s fine for most people but, artists should probably get something with better colors.
The speakers on these dell g5 gaming laptop fire towards you from the front and that automatically makes these a bit more pleasant sounding.
It’s loud, it’s got good clarity, bass is kinda lacking and the default equalizer setting just wrecks the clarity by boosting the bass.
but, once you disable that they sound pretty good.
On the left you have a Thunderbolt 3 port, USB-A, A headphone jack.
There’s a USB-A and a full size SD slot on the right. On the rear is an Ethernet port, DisplayPort, 1/3 USB-A port and an HDMI port.
Personally, I like the whole display outputs on the back deal it kind of tidied everything up and they’re going to route behind your desk anyway.
So, it just makes sense right opening up the laptop is dead easy there’s no warranty void stickers and Dell is pretty good with this.
A couple Phillips screws with some latches and you get access to all the internal components.
There’s the two RAM slots they all come with both slots filled.
Even the 8 gig models and m2 slot with a secondary two and a half inch drive slot as well as the upgradable Wi-Fi card.
This one’s the Intel 9560 and I’m pulling about 570 megabits per second.
The SSD they’re using is a Toshiba drive. but, the write speeds on these smaller drives are unbelievably slow.
I would personally recommend going with the smallest SSD and then upgrading it yourself. You can find one terabyte drives for about $90 right now.
You honestly might as well the 9750 H paired with the r-tx 2060 pushes up some pretty strong performance.
Obviously, the dual channel Ram also helps. Glad they didn’t go single channel here. The CPU does get quite hot.
Heat or thermals
It averages above 90 degrees and it peaks at 100 regularly.
But, it doesn’t throttle too and the GPU will sit between 77 and 81 degrees depending on the game and this is with the max performance.
Thermal profile fans is rather quiet on max their higher pitch than other fans.
but, even then they’re not particularly loud or anything unlike the Dell XPS 15.
Where you can remove the two and a half inch drive slot for a bigger battery.
This only comes with a 60 watt battery and battery life is rather short.
I’m giving like three and a half maybe four hours of battery life with normal use.
The USB C port does not support charging unfortunately. so, the dell g5 as a whole is a pretty good laptop and I think for a lot of people.
The test images I shot on the G5 15 were so blotchy and grainy that I didn’t know where my forehead ended and hair began.
My charcoal shirt had a white fuzzy design all over it, but it looked pure black in the image, and the lights behind me turned the parts of the ceiling into complete white space.
If you’re thinking about streaming on this thing, treat yourself to an external webcam.
Dell G5 pros
- Solid keyboard
- Great battery life
Dell g5 cons
- Chunky design
- Dim display
- Poor speakers
- Middling performance and graphics
The sacrifices that they made to bring this down in price.
The trackpad and the speakers compared to the really high end laptops are completely non issues. because you got a mouse and a pair of rock and headphones right.
however, I am NOT a big fan of the screen I wish I had better colors and I wish the thermals were a bit better.
but, that’s really about it for gamers specifically. I think dell did a pretty good job.
so that’s the end of this dell g5 review.
